Make a Gift
The integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s in Mathematics gives accelerated undergraduate students the opportunity to complete both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Mathematics with only two additional semesters at the graduate level after completion of their undergraduate degree. This program helps prepare students for either careers in industry or to continue their education in a doctoral program and allows many students to study a subfield of mathematics in more depth than the BS in Mathematics alone.
IDP Admission
After being accepted into the BS major, students will complete the internal application process during their second semester as a major, which is typically the Spring semester of the Junior year. Admission to the integrated degree program is contingent upon progress towards the Bachelor’s degree at the time of entry into the major. Students who are prepared to enter the integrated degree program typically have completed the following requirements:
- MATH 1271/1371/1571
- MATH 1272/1372/1572H
- MATH 2243/2373/2574H
- MATH 2263/2374/2573H
- MATH 3283W
- and at least 1 course at the 4000 or 5000 level.
- BS Majors will have also completed PHYS 1301W, 1302W and 2503 .
The internal application will also require 1 letter of recommendation from a faculty member in Mathematics and a brief statement describing why the student is seeking entry into this program. Most students admitted to the IDP will have a 3.2 to 3.5 technical GPA and at least a 3.0 GPA in their Mathematics courses. This is inline with the major admission expectations.

Deadlines & due dates
The application deadlines are April 1 for a fall start and November 1 for a spring start. Application materials are to be submitted tomathgrad@umn.edu as a .pdf. The statement will be sent by the applicant and the letter of recommendation will be sent by the recommender. Students will be notified of the outcome of their application via email by June 1st for a fall start and by December 1st for a spring start. In some cases, an admission decision will be put on deferral until semester grades are finalized. Students will be notified if their application is on hold.

Degree progress
Degree progress
Students who are accepted to the IDP in the internal application process will be admitted to the graduate program upon completion of their undergraduate degree assuming continued academic success. In particular, it is expected that students will maintain a major GPA of 3.0 once admitted to the IDP. Admission to the program can be revoked should the student not successfully complete all the admission requirements.
Students admitted to the Integrated B.S.Math./M.S.Programwill complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within 4 years (8 semesters) for NHS and 3 years (6 semesters) for NAS students. Students can transfer all courses taken at the graduate level (5xxx or above) to the graduate program which are not used to undergraduate degree requirements. Students will complete a minimum of two semesters, completing 18 credits as a graduate student before completing master’s program requirements
